VTEX builds ultra-low latency serverless applications with Azion and allows thousands of customers to accelerate their sales on the web

VTEX has the challenge of helping companies like Adidas, Nestlé, Coca-Cola, Stanley Black & Decker, Whirlpool and Sony, among more than 2500 active online stores in 32 different countries, to continue evolving and reinventing themselves in the digital age.

VTEX offers a complete e-commerce platform, with native marketplace and OMS. These solutions allow major brands to sell more, operate more efficiently, scale their operations and deliver a quality experience to their consumers.

Continuously improving software, modern API architecture and VTEX development tools enable customers to accelerate the pace of innovation and stay focused on the core business of their companies. However, to deliver scalability and performance gains, it is necessary to transcend the limits of the cloud.

With processing power up to 30x faster than the cloud[1] and the flexibility to build modern applications, Azion’s Edge Platform provides resources that help VTEX create transformative solutions for digital commerce.

VTEX’s marketplace ecosystem operates 100% in the cloud; in 2020, it became the fastest growing e-commerce platform in the world[2], underscoring how much the cloud has contributed to the company by achieving great results.

However, technology continues to rapidly evolve. VTEX, in turn, moved its applications to Azion’s Edge in order to prepare for future demands, and today VTEX has essential tools and resources that allow it to:

  • accelerate content delivery at the edge by configuring cache policies and targeting rules that provide the flexibility that digital commerce strategies require; and
  • improving connectivity on a global level, providing low latency and high speed of response to all users, even in locations where Internet quality is poor.

The creation of edge applications allows the team of specialists from VTEX to microcache applications running in the cloud. Thus, it is possible to speed up the processing of applications and, at the same time, make them much more scalable and easier to manage.

With the implementation of Edge Application in Azion’s platform, VTEX not only increased application performance and simplified developers’ delivery flow, but dramatically reduced costs with cloud providers.

Results to impacts

In just six months of using Azion’s Edge Platform, VTEX delivered hundreds of billions of requests at the edge—more than 90 billion of which did not have to connect to the source infrastructure—with:

  • thousands of domains using an edge application, taking VTEX to a new level of scalability, automation and management complexity;
  • ultra-low latency, processing data on more than 100 Azion’s edge locations worldwide;
  • full availability, as the platform is protected by multilayer security and Mitigation Centers to contain DDoS attacks; and
  • high-speed application loading, with each requisition delivered to the nearest, healthiest, and best performing Edge Node available.

In the same period, VTEX built edge applications to do microcaching and thereby speed up application processing and optimize content delivery with custom cache rules for each type of user device, resulting in the delivery of more than 5 PB of data in Azion’s Edge Caching layer, and this volume is still increasing.

In addition to Edge Application and Edge Functions, the VTEX team has Azion engineers at its disposal, including via Slack, to help enable projects and provide support in the midst of critical scenarios, ensuring that the VTEX service continues to evolve and is available at all times.
