A reverse proxy is a server that accepts client requests and forwards them to one or more backend servers. Unlike a forward proxy that acts on behalf of clients (hiding client identity), a reverse proxy acts on behalf of servers (hiding backend server details). Clients communicate with the reverse proxy, unaware of the actual servers processing their requests.
Reverse proxies serve as a single entry point for web applications, providing load balancing across multiple backend servers, SSL/TLS termination to offload cryptographic operations, caching to reduce backend load, and security filtering to protect origin servers. The reverse proxy abstracts backend infrastructure from clients, enabling server changes without impacting client configurations.
Common reverse proxy implementations include Nginx, HAProxy, Apache HTTP Server, Envoy, and Traefik. Cloud providers offer managed reverse proxy services through load balancers (AWS ALB, Google Cloud Load Balancing, Azure Application Gateway). Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) act as distributed reverse proxies positioned close to users worldwide.

How Reverse Proxy Works
A reverse proxy sits between clients (browsers, mobile apps, other services) and backend servers (application servers, databases, microservices). When a client makes a request, it reaches the reverse proxy first. The proxy inspects the request, determines which backend should handle it, forwards the request, receives the response, and returns it to the client.
Request routing logic varies by use case. Load balancing algorithms distribute requests across backend servers (round-robin, least connections, IP hash). Path-based routing directs requests to different backends based on URL path (/api/* to API servers, /* to web servers). Header-based routing uses Host headers or custom headers to route to appropriate backends.
SSL/TLS termination occurs at the reverse proxy, which holds certificates and handles HTTPS encryption/decryption. Backend servers communicate over HTTP on internal networks, reducing cryptographic overhead on application servers. This centralizes certificate management and enables HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 optimization at the proxy layer.
Response caching at the reverse proxy serves repeated requests directly without contacting backends. Cacheable responses (static assets, public API responses) are stored with TTL (time-to-live) policies. Subsequent requests for cached content return immediately from the proxy, reducing latency and backend load.
Reverse Proxy Functions
Load Balancing
Distribute incoming requests across multiple backend servers. Algorithms include round-robin, weighted round-robin, least connections, IP hash. Prevents any single server from becoming a bottleneck. Enables horizontal scaling by adding backend servers transparently.
SSL/TLS Termination
Handle HTTPS encryption at the proxy layer. Decrypt incoming TLS traffic, forward unencrypted requests to backends over private networks. Centralizes certificate management. Reduces CPU load on application servers from cryptographic operations.
Caching
Store frequently requested responses. Serve cached content without contacting backends. Reduces latency for repeated requests. Decreases backend server load. Implements HTTP caching headers (Cache-Control, ETag, Last-Modified).
Request Routing
Route requests to appropriate backends based on path, headers, query parameters. Path-based routing (/api/v1/* to API service, /static/* to static file server). Host-based routing (different domains to different applications). Header-based routing for API versioning.
Security
Hide backend server IP addresses from clients. Implement rate limiting to prevent abuse. Filter malicious requests (SQL injection, XSS patterns). IP allowlisting and blocking. Web Application Firewall (WAF) integration for advanced threat protection.
Compression
Compress responses (gzip, brotli) before sending to clients. Reduces bandwidth usage. Improves page load times. Offloads compression work from application servers.
Reverse Proxy vs. Forward Proxy
| Characteristic | Reverse Proxy | Forward Proxy |
|---|---|---|
| Acts on behalf of | Servers | Clients |
| Position | Between internet and servers | Between clients and internet |
| Clients aware of proxy? | No (transparent) | Yes (configured) |
| Use case | Protect servers, load balance | Access control, anonymity |
| Example | Nginx, HAProxy, Cloud CDN | Squid, corporate proxy |
| Hides | Backend server details | Client identity |
A forward proxy helps clients access external resources (internet access control, anonymization). A reverse proxy helps servers handle incoming requests (load distribution, security). Both intercept traffic but serve opposite parties.
When to Use a Reverse Proxy
Use a reverse proxy when you need:
- Load balancing across multiple application servers
- SSL/TLS termination to simplify certificate management
- Caching to reduce backend server load
- Request routing to multiple backend services
- Security filtering and DDoS protection
- Hide backend server infrastructure from clients
Do not use a reverse proxy when:
- Single server handles all traffic without scalability requirements
- Direct server access required for specific protocols
- Latency-sensitive applications where proxy overhead matters
- Very simple architectures without load balancing or routing needs
Signals You Need a Reverse Proxy
- Multiple application servers requiring load distribution
- SSL/TLS certificate management complexity
- Backend servers overloaded with cacheable traffic
- Need to hide backend infrastructure from public internet
- Multiple services requiring single domain with path-based routing
- DDoS attacks or malicious traffic requiring filtering
Metrics and Measurement
Performance Metrics:
- Request latency: Time added by proxy layer (target: <5ms overhead)
- Throughput: Requests per second handled (depends on hardware and configuration)
- Backend latency: Response time from origin servers (monitor for degradation)
- Cache hit rate: Percentage of requests served from cache (target: >80% for static content)
Reliability Metrics:
- Uptime: Reverse proxy availability (target: 99.99%+)
- Backend health: Healthy vs. unhealthy backend servers
- Connection errors: Failed connections to backends
- Retry rate: Percentage of requests requiring retry to different backend
Security Metrics:
- Blocked requests: Requests filtered by security rules
- Rate limit violations: Requests exceeding rate limits
- SSL/TLS handshake failures: Failed TLS negotiations
- Certificate expiration: Days until certificate expires (monitor proactively)
According to NGINX performance benchmarks (2024), a well-configured reverse proxy can handle 100,000+ concurrent connections with minimal latency overhead (1-3ms). Caching can reduce backend load by 60-80% for static content and 20-40% for dynamic content with appropriate cache headers.

Common Mistakes and Fixes
Mistake: Single reverse proxy creating single point of failure Fix: Deploy multiple reverse proxy instances behind DNS load balancing or use managed services with built-in high availability. Health checks should remove unhealthy proxy instances. Monitor proxy health like any critical infrastructure component.
Mistake: Not tuning connection pooling and timeouts Fix: Configure appropriate connection timeouts, keepalive settings, and connection pool sizes. Too short timeouts cause unnecessary retries; too long timeouts delay failure detection. Match settings to backend performance characteristics.
Mistake: Caching dynamic content inappropriately Fix: Cache only responses with appropriate cache headers. Avoid caching authenticated user-specific content. Implement cache invalidation strategy for updated content. Use Cache-Control headers to control caching behavior.
Mistake: Inadequate logging and observability Fix: Log request metadata, routing decisions, upstream latency, and errors. Implement distributed tracing through proxy layer. Set up metrics for request rate, latency, error rate, and cache performance. Logs enable troubleshooting when issues arise.
Mistake: Ignoring HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 support Fix: Enable HTTP/2 on reverse proxy to support multiplexing. Consider HTTP/3 (QUIC) for mobile clients on unreliable networks. Modern reverse proxies support HTTP/2 and HTTP/3. Update configurations for protocol improvements.
Mistake: Not implementing proper health checks Fix: Configure active and passive health checks. Active checks send periodic probes to backends. Passive checks mark backends unhealthy based on request failures. Implement graceful drain during backend deployments to avoid dropping requests.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a reverse proxy and a load balancer? A load balancer distributes traffic across backend servers—a specific function. A reverse proxy is a broader concept that includes load balancing plus SSL termination, caching, security filtering, and request routing. Many reverse proxies (Nginx, HAProxy) function as load balancers. Load balancers often provide reverse proxy capabilities.
Do I need a reverse proxy if I have a CDN? CDNs are distributed reverse proxies positioned globally. If you use Azion or another CDN, you already have reverse proxy capabilities. You may still need an origin reverse proxy for backend load balancing. Many architectures use both: CDN at the edge for global distribution, reverse proxy at origin for backend management.
How does a reverse proxy handle WebSocket connections? Reverse proxies forward WebSocket upgrade requests to backends. Configure WebSocket timeout settings to prevent premature connection termination. Enable WebSocket support in proxy configuration. CDN reverse proxies should support WebSocket proxying for real-time applications.
Should I use Nginx or HAProxy for a reverse proxy? Nginx excels at HTTP/HTTPS reverse proxying, caching, and serving static content. HAProxy excels at TCP-level load balancing with advanced health checking. Choose Nginx for HTTP-heavy workloads with caching needs. Choose HAProxy for generic TCP load balancing or advanced health check requirements.
How do I configure SSL/TLS on a reverse proxy? Obtain certificates from Certificate Authority (Let’s Encrypt for free certificates). Configure reverse proxy with certificate and private key paths. Enable TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3. Disable weak cipher suites. Configure OCSP stapling for performance. Redirect HTTP to HTTPS. Consider automated certificate renewal.
Can a reverse proxy improve performance? Yes. Reverse proxies cache responses, reducing backend load. Compression reduces bandwidth. SSL termination offloads cryptographic work from application servers. Connection pooling reduces backend connection overhead. HTTP/2 multiplexing reduces connection count. Geographic distribution through CDN reverse proxies reduces latency.
How do reverse proxies handle authentication? Reverse proxies can validate authentication tokens before forwarding requests. Implement JWT validation at proxy layer. Forward authenticated user information to backends in headers. For OAuth 2.0, configure reverse proxy to validate access tokens. This offloads auth from application servers and centralizes security.
How This Applies in Practice
Reverse proxies are fundamental infrastructure for modern web applications. Almost every production web architecture includes a reverse proxy for load balancing, SSL termination, and security. The abstraction enables backend infrastructure changes without client impact, horizontal scaling through load distribution, and centralized security controls.
Implementation Strategy:
- Deploy reverse proxy in front of application servers
- Configure load balancing algorithm based on traffic patterns
- Set up SSL/TLS termination with automated certificate renewal
- Implement caching for static content and cacheable API responses
- Configure health checks for backend servers
- Monitor proxy metrics alongside application metrics
Configuration Best Practices:
- Use sensible timeouts: connect, read, write timeouts tuned to backend performance
- Enable keepalive connections to reduce overhead
- Configure appropriate worker processes and connections for hardware
- Implement graceful reload for configuration changes without dropping connections
- Log request ID for distributed tracing across services
- Security headers (HSTS, X-Frame-Options) at proxy layer
High Availability Considerations:
- Deploy multiple reverse proxy instances
- Use DNS load balancing or anycast for proxy distribution
- Configure backup upstream servers
- Implement circuit breakers for failing backends
