Challenge
VTEX faces the challenge of helping companies such as Adidas, Nestlé, Coca-Cola, Stanley Black & Decker, Whirlpool, and Sony—among more than 2,500 active online stores across 32 countries—continue evolving and reinventing themselves in the digital era.
To achieve this, VTEX provides a complete digital commerce platform with native marketplace and OMS capabilities, allowing major brands to sell more, operate more efficiently, scale their operations, and deliver high-quality digital experiences to consumers.
With a modern API-based architecture and advanced development tools, VTEX enables customers to accelerate innovation while maintaining focus on their core business. However, achieving new levels of scalability and performance requires going beyond traditional cloud infrastructure.
With processing capabilities up to 30× faster than traditional cloud environments[1] and the flexibility to build modern applications, the Azion Platform provides the resources VTEX needs to create transformative solutions for digital commerce.
Solution
VTEX’s marketplace ecosystem primarily operates in cloud environments. In 2020, it became the fastest-growing e-commerce platform in the world[2], highlighting the critical role cloud infrastructure played in its growth.
However, as technology continues to evolve, new infrastructure layers become necessary to address global latency, performance, and scalability challenges. To support future demands, VTEX began executing part of its applications on Azion’s distributed infrastructure.
Using capabilities available on the Azion Platform, VTEX was able to:
- Accelerate content and application delivery through advanced caching policies and segmentation rules;
- Improve global connectivity by providing low latency and high response speeds to users worldwide, even in regions with limited internet quality;
- Run application logic closer to users, reducing dependency on origin infrastructure.
The creation of applications running on Azion’s distributed infrastructure enables VTEX engineers to implement microcaching strategies for applications hosted in the cloud, accelerating processing while increasing scalability and simplifying operations management.
With this architecture, VTEX significantly improved application performance, simplified developer deployment workflows, and reduced reliance on cloud infrastructure.
Results to impacts
In just six months using the Azion Platform, VTEX delivered hundreds of billions of requests processed on distributed infrastructure, more than 90 billion of which never needed to reach origin infrastructure.
Key results include:
- Thousands of domains running applications on distributed infrastructure, elevating VTEX to a new level of scalability and operational automation;
- Ultra-low latency through data processing on Azion’s global distributed network;
- High availability supported by multi-layer security and global DDoS mitigation centers;
- Fast application load times with requests processed at the closest available location to the user.
During the same period, VTEX implemented microcaching strategies to accelerate application processing and optimize content delivery with custom cache rules for different user devices. This resulted in the delivery of more than 5 PB of data processed by Azion Cache, a volume that continues to grow.
In addition to implementing its own caching rules and integrating Functions with cloud services, the VTEX team also works closely with Azion engineers—available even through Slack—to support projects and critical scenarios, ensuring the VTEX platform continues to evolve and remain highly available.
